Hi from The Garden Spot in Kentucky.

As I type this, South Central Kentucky is expecting a real snowstorm. They are even talking 5 to 7 inches of snow. So we might be snowed in a couple of days! But I don't mind.

A little about being a nontraditional student: After I went back to school, I took teaching courses, and now I tutor English as a Second Language students and also coach people about buying and selling books and collectibles. But what I like to do the most is help other nontraditional students find help and support.

And that is what this newsletter is all about - helping nontraditional students find help online and other places.

OUR LAST ISSUE: For those that missed it, our last issue was all about Motivation. This month's newsletter is about making friends at school.

MAKING FRIENDS!

This is a topic I love. Some older students say, "I can't make friends my age at school." Now, if you are getting your GED, or taking a subject like Math Review, you sometimes can find yourself the YOUNGEST student in class. If you are in a face-to-face class, though, that everyone at school needs, you can feel out of place and wonder how you will make friends in class.

Some people say you shouldn't even TRY to make friends in class. I disagree! Just put yourself out there and introduce yourself. Trade names, emails, and phone numbers. Start a study group - you will find you will have plenty of time to chat before the "real" work starts each time you meet. It's a great way to make friends.

You can also join a club on campus, or start or re-start a Nontraditional Student group. Too shy to think about it? Find somebody else to lead the group.

Want more information on making friends at school? Here are some postings to the Nontrad Blog that can help you.

MORE STUDY TIPS - I promised to list some more study tips this issue. So here are some: #1: Make a study area at home that is away from everything and hopefully has a door you can close. Explain to your family or loved ones that you must not be disturbed while you are studying.

#2. If you have a question about an assignment, don't hesitate to ask the teacher about it. You could wind up getting a much better grade because of it. Are you shy? This could be hard for you, but well worth it.

#3. Make some flash cards before a quiz or exam and use them to study with. Though they are old-fashioned, they work great and don't cost a lot, especially if you make them yourself.

LET'S GET IN TOUCH: Do you have a story you would like to share about making friends at school? I would love to read it. How about a favorite study tip? Ditto.

Please email or Twitter to me with your ideas on what to write about and feature here on the Nontrad News in future issues. I love feedback! Here is that information:
