The Nontrad News

Going back to school after a break? This newsletter is for you.

Welcome to the Nontrad News! I want to thank every one of you that signed up for this newsletter, and everyone accessing it via the internet.

You may be a nontraditional student, going back to school after a break, or you might be thinking about it. You may also be a staff member who helps nontraditional students.

A heads up: can you see the graphics or pictures on this newsletter? If not, OK graphics on your browser or give permission for your email reader to see them. This should be easy to do.

I have links to the latest blog articles on my Nontrad sites. Just click on the links to go to those linked articles, tweets, and pages.

HI AGAIN FROM KENTUCKY

Well, I have my tomato plants and also my corn seeds now, and fixed the tiller I am using. Along with that, I am busy studying online on how to make my blogs and websites better.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME

I went back to school at 52 in order to get my teacher's certification. It was such a fun journey. I learned so much. Now I am out of school, but am thinking of going back in the future. In the meantime, I like to help other nontraditional students with a blog, a website, a Twitter site, and a Facebook group.

SPRING SEMESTER - A CELEBRATION!

It is time for celebrating the end of Spring semester. Congratulations to many of you, who have completed diplomas and certificates. Final reports and exams are finished. And now comes graduation or planning for next year. Some of you are busy signing up for Summer School and Fall semester. Others are starting summer jobs, or taking a well-deserved rest time.

STAYING CONNECTED

Nontraditional students can stay connected over the summer, especially those who are taking summer school classes. Just make sure to keep the contact information of your fellow students, like phone numbers, and addresses, for later on. Try sending a holiday or greeting card this summer or during the holidays.

You can also connect online through several groups. Check out the links to the left on this newsletter. Some groups I moderate, and others have other moderators. They can be great places to feel connected and can be a great avenue to make friends and get advice about going back to school.

PLANNING FOR NEXT YEAR

Are you checking your pre-requisites? Sometimes it is difficult to take a class in order, but sometimes rules require it. You may want to check with your school advisor to make sure you are taking the correct classes in the correct order, just in case. Some schools require that you double-check your classes, which might be a very good thing.

FOR NEW NONTRADITIONAL STUDENTS

It can be a pretty scary proposition to even think about going back to school, but for those actually registering right now, you will be wanting to be prepared this fall. This can cut down a LOT on stress or fear, because you will "be prepared" - - as the Girl Scout motto says.

You may want to refresh your computer skills and get organized for school this summer. Do you have a backpack or rolling cart? Does your school have facilities or a club for nontrads? Now is the time to check out the school (if you are going to go to face-to-face classes) OR your computer if you have all on-line classes. Will your computer connect correctly to Blackboard or to the school's computer class?

Don't fret or worry, just make yourself a list of things to do and check about. You may want to make an appointment with a school staffer or student helper at your school or connect via email and see if your school has a checklist for new students. After doing these things, you will feel a lot calmer when school starts.

****Betsy's Study Tip of the Month: Keep your notes and class information organized. You may choose to use a separate notebook for each class. Make sure you know where all your information is located. What helped for me: a 3-hole punch, a 3-ring notebook and plenty of paper to write on, extra pens and pencils, and a dated organizer for due dates and fellow classmate's phone numbers and emails.
