May 2010: More Nontrad News and some articles from the Nontrad Blog.
This newsletter is for people going back to school after a break, people thinking about it, and people who help them.
Some of you have recently graduated. Some are signing up for classes. I hope this and the other Nontrad News issues help you stay motivated each month.
ARE YOU A YOUNG NONTRAD TOO?
I recently received a letter from a nontraditional student on the Nontrad Facebook page. She said that she is a little older than some nontraditional students, but not a lot. She is in the Nontrad group at school, but they are a lot older, and many have different interests.
I suggested that she maybe join some other on-campus groups and maybe even go out for "rush" and join a sorority. Although I was not in a sorority when I was in school (both times) I have heard good things about them. They can be a great place to meet new friends.
I will be working hard to improve this newsletter each time I do it. Thank you for your comments and suggestions.
Here is some of a recent article from the Nontrad Blog:
Nontraditional
Students - labels and preconceptions - and how do nontrads feel
Some say only students a LOT older qualify for this
name - - say, maybe 30 and over? Others (most others, I think) say that
anyone who is not a "traditional" student - living on campus, single, etc. is a nontraditional one.
Sometimes the line is blurred. But I think most students who don't fit the traditional mold can feel somehow like an outsider at school - like somebody who doesn't quite fit in. In fact, I have had some people say that even though they MIGHT be able to do an online class, going back to school with younger students just terrifies them! Some younger students make a point of
including older students in conversations. Others would rather they just didn't
exist - - which is really a moot point, because they do exist, and in higher
numbers than ever. Have a great couple of weeks!
Nontraditionally Yours,
