August 2010: Time for school.

Hello again, Nontrad News readers. I hope this issue finds you well and happy.

It's time for school!

People are moving into the dorm at Western (WKU). They had interviews of some Resident Assistants at the dorms on TV yesterday. They were talking about how some students were going to need help, because it was the first time they had been on campus.

Some students this week now have attended their very first classes. They are excited about this year.

It's still hot here in Kentucky, and on the WKU campus, some students are doing more walking than they have in a long time!

Are you in school right now? Are you planning to be? This can be such a fun time for students both old and new.

For-Profit Schools - - and the latest Nightline Investigation.

The main topic for this month's newsletter just HAS to be online vs. face to face schools. The latest "hot topic" on my blog and at the Nontrad Facebook site is the latest investigative look into one very famous online school and exactly how they are doing some of their recruiting. It's definitely a conversation starter!

Here is the link to that video: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/profit-education-investigation-11435587

Do you know anyone who has gone to one school and then tried to transfer, but found out that their credits don't transfer? This can really hurt nontraditional students too.

So... I think this video really is a warning to all students to do their homework when signing up for school, and make sure that they are being well-served.

As long as we nontraditional students are going to pay good money to go back to school, the very least each school can do is to help each of us get our money's worth and be honest.

Get in on the conversation...

That's my two cents worth! What do YOU think?

More Study Skills Tips - from readers.

More study tips - these are from my recent reader comments on the Nontrad Blog:

#1. Record your class lectures. Use an MP3 or small sound recorder. That way you can always go over the class lecture later. You have a backup.

#2. Print up slides and write on them in class. This works well if your instructor posts the PowerPoint slides in advance. It also keeps notes organized. You also don't have to write the same thing down if it is already on the slide.

#3. Use a mechanical pencil with thick lead - this suggestion is for people who prefer NOT to use a pen because of the messiness factor.

Do you have a good study tip to share? Just let me know. My email is lizann447 at yahoo dot com. Just put "nontrads" in the subject line.

Short question of the day:

Do you think that nontraditional students should have their own introduction to school, like a special Nontrad Day or Orientation?

And leave your feedback - what would you like to see here on the Nontrad News? Or do you have an idea for a story, a study hint, or more? Just send this form to me and I will be happy to read it.
