THE NONTRAD NEWS - just put your information on the form to the right, and you will be signed up for the Nontrad News - a fun, informative newsletter that is published 1-2x per month.
AND (NEW) below are some articles from the Nontrad blog you might like. Just click on the links to read more.
You can also read the other Nontrad Newses on this page.
The Newest Nontrad Page here on the site update (July 24) is on the Massachusetts page. I just added another event, the Loving Local Event.
NEW - 5-2010: I am adding Resources to each page, starting with the Kentucky page. This section on the State Pages will list important state resources for information, scholarships, and more.
The Second-Newest Nontrad Page update: (July 20, 2010) The Arkansas Page has been updated and one group added from Southern Arkansas University.
There are several other groups listed on this page, including The University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Henderson State University.
The New York Page has just been updated too. Listed here are nontraditional student groups, scholarship sites for nontraditional students in New York, and information pages about New York colleges. You can go there at this link: http://www.nontradstudents.com/newyork.html
Do you live in or near Massachusetts? My friend Tinky will be singing at the Green Emporium in Colrain on August 21st. So mark your calendar! Find out more and see the official flyer at the MA Nontrad page here OR at the Event Page on this site.
KNOW HOW TO GO: This great site tells people from Washington State, Kentucky, California, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Connecticut, and Florida the 4 steps to going to college, including local links. I am featuring this site here this month. Other states can find information on the main page of the site. I have the feeling other states will follow suit and add their local pages to this site soon.
A hint: turn down your volume if you want - - some of the pages feature a talking person explaining the website. For an example of the state pages, you can check out the the Kentucky Know How 2 Go page.
I
want to thank Deb Peterson of About.com for featuring the Nontrad
Page (this one!), the Nontrad
Newsgroup, and the Nontrad
blog on her page. You can read a great article by her there
called 5
Tips for Fitting In at School. She has some good links there,
too.
I
have archived some other highlights this year below:
August
08 U.S. State of the Month - Alaska
The
University of Alaska at Fairbanks really takes care of its nontraditional students with special
nontraditional student housing. They encourage them to stay
on campus, and have a website explaining
the benefits of single and family housing.
If you
go to school in Alaska, and are a nontraditional student, please send
your information via this page so I can add it here. I would
like to list some Nontraditional student groups from all campuses
in Alaska. Thanks!
July
08 U.S. State of the Month - Kentucky
I am featuring
my home state of Kentucky here for one main reason: to find
out if anything has changed here since last I researched my
state.
I also
may want to take a regular or online course later on.
I am going
to each website this month to see if it is the same or has been
changed or improved. Also, I will be adding any other resources
or information I can find that is new since 2007.
Eastern
Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky has
a group called Older Wiser Learners (OWLS). They also
have a Nontraditional Student Council, which is a branch of
the SGA there.
Eastern
has a new website
for OWLS here. The page is maintained by students. The page
features helpful links, photos, and more. My thanks go out to
Amanda King, current President of the OWLS group, who helped
to update this information. Thank you so much!
Kentucky
State University in Frankfort, Kentucky offers a group on its website called FRIENDS to
help non-traditional students navigate the school. The website is here.
This
other website tells more about Friends. They also have a
link for single parents here (at the bottom of the page) plus
a place to take a new nontraditional student survey.
The Friends
program offers support, plus a quiet study room and more. It
is run by the school.
"Our
purpose is to connect non-traditional students for fun, sharing,
and encouragement."

Some
of the former WKU Online Yahoo group has moved to the
new Yahoo Group here:
I
was in the NTSO, or Non-Traditional Student Organization,
while I was at Western a few years ago.
Now the NTSO group is not meeting at the campus, but hopefully
soon they will start up again.
If
you are a WKU student, and are interested, you can start a
new group anytime. Nontraditional students can contact the
Student Activities office for more info. at 270-745-2459.
I
did read in the student newspaper that a NEW group did form
in 2007 - a group for parents. I can't wait to hear more about
that, and when their meetings are.

Michigan
Info: I have listed some Michigan groups here on the Michigan Page, and also on the Nontrads
blog for this month. I see many pages in Michigan made to
help non-traditional students.
I
especially liked one Nontraditional Student group called O.W.L.S.
(older and wiser law students). I like that name , OWLS. It
would be easy to make a mascot for that group!
There
need to be more non-trad group pages online. If you live in
Michigan, and have a Non-traditional group web page, add
your page here to get it listed.
